Piccadilly Circus, V.E. Day
This photograph captures London's celebrations on V.E (Victory in Europe) day. Taken from outside the London Pavilion by the photographer Wolf Suschitzky, it records the party atmosphere and the jubilant crowds who spontaneously gathered in Piccadilly Circus on hearing the news of peace.
Suschitzky's parents were Austrian Jewish Socialists, and his family had suffered at the hands of the Nazis. He had photographed much of the destruction inflicted on London through the bombing raids.
