Three women working in the hop fields
Three women working in a hop field in Kent, stripping the leaves and stalks from the hops, c. 1935. Hops are the ingredient that adds bitterness to beer and have been grown in Kent since the 16th century. Every September farmers invited workers from London and elsewhere to come and pick the hops. This provided Londoners with a 'holiday with pay' and special trains were provided for them from London Bridge and Victoria stations. Whole families would come and camp on the hop farms.
