A family having a lunch break during a hop-picking holiday
A London family having a lunch break from a hop-picking in Kent, c. 1935. Hops are the ingredient that adds bitterness to beer and have been grown in Kent since the 16th century. Every September farmers would invite workers from London and elsewhere to come and pick the hops. This provided Londoners with a 'holiday with pay' and special trains were provided for them from London Bridge and Victoria stations. Whole families would come and camp on the hop farms.
