Two women on Sutton High Street
A candid snapshot of two women walking along Sutton High Street, c. 1932. These two women's clothes reflect their age differences. In around 1930, older women wore long skirts with overcoats or jackets in winter. Coats with fur collars and cuffs and that fastened on the hip were in vogue. Younger women wore shorter day-dresses, just below the knee or mid-calf. Though still 'boyish' in 1920s style, the look was increasingly softer in the early 1930s. Both women wore hats, as was always expected outside. Berets and cloche hats were popular.
