A man on Sutton High Street
A candid snapshot of a man walking along Sutton High Street, c. 1932. In the 1930s, menswear became more informal than previous decades had allowed. This man wears a lounge suit complete with waistcoat and wide trousers. The morning suit was reserved for the most formal occasions and the bowler hat for business. Flat caps, as shown here, and trilby hats were common for street wear and leisure and were worn by working-class men for their 'best' dress.
