Printed Ephemera — 1954
The Crown Laundry
The Crown Laundry in Chiswick issued Mrs Dick with this laundry book to record her 1954 monthly order. Inside, handwritten receipts detail items of laundry sent for cleaning over a four-year period.
Before domestic plumbing and washing machines were commonplace, those who could afford to sent their washing to laundries. Chiswick, close to the River Thames, was a perfect place for laundries to trade from. All washing had to be labelled, but as the notes in this book show, mistakes were made. Comments by Mrs Dick include 'Have corrected mistake in charges again this week' and 'I return the cotton handkerchief you have sent me [it] is not mine and I refuse to accept any more inferior cotton ones in place of my best linen ones, when they get lost by you ... all things sent to you are marked 'DICK'.'
