Printed Ephemera — 1907
The Metropolitan Programme
Fold out weekly theatre programme for the Metropolitan Theatre a variety and music hall located at Edgware Road, Paddington. The programme lists performers for the week Monday December 9th 1907, which included the Suffragette Kitty Marion. The programme is also printed with advertisements for good and services including the medicine chlorodyne, Dunn's famous hats and the Hyde Park winter games club.
The programme cover is printed with a grey and white illustration depicting scenes of 'song', 'mirth' and 'gaiety', together with an image of the theatre's facade. The 1897 theatre was designed by Frank Matcham, who also designed several important London theatres including Shepherd's Bush empire theatre, the Hackney Empire and London Coliseum.
Kitty Marion combined her career as a music hall artiste with her career as a suffragette militant. She was imprisoned 4 times between 1909 and the end of 1912 for window breaking, arson and other militant activity. During her imprisonments she regularly went on hunger strike and was consequently forcibly fed by the prison authorities, which, on one occasion at least, led to her early release.
