George & Mary keep house on £9470 per week
This placard relates to the campaign against the Unemployment Act of 1934 organised by the National Unemployed Workers Movement. The act set new rates of relief for the unemployed. Men over 21 were paid 17 shillings a week, women 15 shillings, and 2 shillings was the rate for a dependent child.
The campaign against the act coincided with the celebrations for King George V's silver jubilee in 1935. Here the protestors make a point about the living expenses of King George and Queen Mary.
