Printed Ephemera — 1992-1993
Poster
Theatre poster announcing the December to January 1992/3 run of 'Arawak Gold' at the Cochrane Theatre, Southampton Row. The show is described as 'London's only reggae pantomime'. The poster carries an image of the show's star, Oscar James, who grew up in Trinidad and came to England at the end of the 1950s. The Arawak were indigenous people of the West Indies who were exploited by the Spanish in search of gold. The pantomime was staged by the Talawa Theatre Company, founded in 1986, which calls itself 'Britain's foremost Black-led theatre company'. Its productions have included Shakespearean plays, African classics and new work by Black dramatists.
