Printed Ephemera — 1986
Irish Prisoners Appeal
This flyer was produced by the Irish in Britain Representation Group (IBRG), a campaigning organisation formed in 1981. The IBRG campaigned for the rights of the Irish community in the UK and during the 1980s and early 1990s focused on the treatment of Irish prisoners in police custody. The flyer advertises pickets of Brixton Prison organised by the IBRG in protest at the treatment of Irish Republican prisoners Martina Anderson and Ella O'Dwyer.
Martina Anderson and Ella O'Dwyer were members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army. They were arrested in Glasgow in 1985 along with Patrick Magee, later convicted for planting the bomb at the Grand Hotel in Brighton during the 1984 Conservative Party conference. Both women were held on remand at Brixton Prison for 13 months before being handed life sentences for conspiring to cause explosions. During their imprisonment both women were repeatedly strip-searched by prison guards. The two women were subsequently transferred to Durham Prison and then to Maghaberry Prison in Northern Ireland before being released under the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
