Printed Ephemera — 1910
The Operating Theatre at The Middlesex Hospital
These three postcards were posted by Bert, an in-patient at Middlesex Hospital during 1910, to his sister Dora in Shoesburyness, Essex. Two of the photographs show the outside of the hospital and the operating theatre. The third shows Founder Ward, which Bert has marked with numbers and crosses identifying his bed and the doctor and nurse who are treating him. Bert's note says how pleased he was to receive Dora's flowers (though he notes they arrived crushed), and how disappointed he is that doctors are often too busy to visit his ward every day.
All large London hospitals produced similar postcards: they promoted hospital services and facilities and were used to by patients to write to friends and family.
