Motor racing crowd at Crystal Palace
A crowd watching motor racing at Crystal Palace, 1957. A 2-mile circuit was built at Crystal Palace in 1936 but closed in 1939 with the onset of World War II. In 1951 the London County Council re-furbished and shortened the circuit and racing began again in May 1953. The circuit continued in use until 1972 with many of the world's greatest drivers, including Stirling Moss, James Hunt, Jim Clark and Graham Hill, having competed there at some time or other.
