Museum in Docklands — 1831
Petition
Printed petition recording the names of Preferable and Extra dock workers employed by the St Katharine Dock Company who requested changes to the selection process at the 'call for work', 1831. Casual labourers looking for work would crowd around the docks in the mornings waiting to be picked to do a job. Of the 35 petitioners, 20 had Irish names. One had since been dismissed for entering the Docks in a state of intoxication.
