Working History — C. 1975
Kiosk, telephone kiosk
The Croydon pattern telephone kiosk was developed by Post Office Telecommunications in the 1970s as a potential successor to the traditional red phone box. Prototypes were field-tested in the Croydon area. The new design was intended to be more-user-friendly than the older cast-iron models. Design features of the new pattern included wheelchair access and better lighting. Despite successful testing, the new design was not adopted by the Post Office however, owing to the high cost of production.
