Working History — C. 1950
Picture transmission terminal
The Muirhead firm was founded in 1894 by the Scottish electrical engineer, Alexander Muirhead. Whilst studying at St Bartholomew's Hospital laboratory, Muirhead became the first person to record an electrocardiogram (a person's heartbeat). In the inter-war years the Muirhead company specialised in equipment for submarine cable stations.
This Muirhead-Jarvis Type D-355-B picture transmitter was manufactured by the firm at its Beckenham factory. Transmitters like this were used by the General Post Office to send and receive photographs or 'picturegrams', mostly for newspapers and magazines.
