Working History — 1981
Telephone, Eiger telephone
'Special range' telephones were introduced by Post Office Telecommunications in 1978 in response to consumer demand for more stylish designs. At the time customers could not purchase telephones but had to rent them from the Post Office. Rental charges for special range telephones were higher and customers had to pay a one-off installation fee.
The Eiger telephone was manufactured for British Telecom by the Swiss company Gfeller Telecommunications. It came onto the market in 1981 and was available in red, stone, brown and dark grey. In 1982 it cost £30 to have an Eiger installed and £2.25 per quarter to rent.
