Printed Ephemera — 1924
Gold Coast - British Empire Exhibition
Souvenir picture postcard of the Gold Coast pavilion at the British Empire Exhibition. Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, the postcard reproduces a colour drawing by the artist Charles E. Flower depicting the facade of the pavilion. On the reverse is printed a description of the exhibit. The Gold Coast (now known as Ghana) exhibition pavilion was based on the castles built five hundred years previously by the first European arrivals to the region from Denmark, Holland and Portugal. Cadbury’s ran a stand in the pavilion selling cocoa, reflecting the fact that half the world cocoa crop grew in the Gold Coast region. Visitors also had the opportunity to hear African drumming and to see Ashanti objects such as clothing and metalwork.
The British Empire exhibition was intended to celebrate the achievements of the British empire. The Gold Coast exhibit was one of three pavilions representing the West African Colonies - the other two being Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
