Working History — 1924
Game, card game
The Western Electric Company's head office was at Connaught House in the Aldwych and its works were at North Woolwich and New Southgate. The company later changed its name to Standard Telephones and Cables.
The Chinese card game Mah Jong became a worldwide craze in the 1920s and arrived in England in 1923. This game was produced for Western Electric as a souvenir of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition. It was probably given as a gift from the company to visiting clients.
The box contains a small pocket guide explaining how to play the game, a scoring pad and cards. The cards are printed on one side with a design incorporating the British Empire Exhibition lion overlaid with a candlestick telephone. The other side of the cards include various adverts for Western Electric products.
