Telephone
'Special range' telephones were introduced by Post Office Telecommunications in 1978 in response to consumer demand for more stylish and unusual designs. At the time customers could not purchase telephones but had to rent them from the Post Office. Rental charges for special range telephones were higher and customers had to pay a one-off installation fee.
The Post Office sub-contracted the manufacturing of its telephones to a range of companies. This Contempra SR1002A telephone was manufactured by GEC-AEI Telecommunications at its factory in Newton Aycliffe. The Contempra was available in three colours: gold, brown and orange.
