Printed Ephemera — 1911
Photograph, photographic print
Four portrait photographs of suffragettes dressed as historical figures as they appeared in the WSPU organised Coronation Procession of 1911. The photographs are applied to a sheet of lined paper extracted from one of Nurse Pine's scrapbooks. The two top figures represent one of Abbess Hlda's Nuns and Lady Richard Hackney a female member of the Fishmonger's Company, in 1322. The bottom left hand figure represents a 16th century peasant, the right hand photograph that has two figures, a medieval woman in the foreground and possibly her servant in the background are unidentifiable. Three of the photographs appear in Votes for Women newspaper, June 1911.
The women were part of the Historical Pageant section of the Procession where women represented inspirational historical female figures, Organised by the Women's Social and Political Union this spectacular procession was held a week before the coronation of George V with the intention of enlisting the support of the new King for the proposed Conciliation Bill. This Bill about to be debated in Parliament proposed the parliamentary franchise for women who were responsible for the premises they occupied. However, despite their efforts, George V made it clear he did not support the Suffragette campaign and opposed the Conciliation Bill.
