A Bengali wedding
London has a Bangladeshi population of ca. 222,000 people. Bengali weddings consist of many rituals and ceremonies and can last several days. The marriage is attended by the bride and grooms' extended families. The day before the wedding, offerings are made to family ancestors. On the day, the couple's families exchange gifts of food and clothes, while preparations are made for the ceremony. The bride and groom undergo ritual bathing and dressing. The bride usually wears a red sari and is carried several times in a circle around the groom. During the ceremony, a holy man chants mantras and the bride and groom exchange garlands. Feasting, poetry and games follow the wedding.
