Official Opening of North Automatic Telephone Exchange
This programme accompanied the official opening of the North Automatic Telephone Exchange in Islington. The exchange was opened by the Mayor of Islington, Councillor HG Coleman.
The event was presided over by WHU Napier, Controller of the London Telephone Service. The mayor made the first call using the new exchange followed by a speech by the FW Phillips, Director of Telecommunications at the General Post Office.
The central pages show photographs of the switchroom at the old manual public exchange contrasted with the new automatic apparatus which did not require telephonists. The North Automatic Exchange was the 65th London exchange to be converted to automatic. It covered an area of approximately 1.5 square miles in the borough of Islington and could handle around 26, 000 calls.
