Printed Ephemera — 1979
Mondial House
This brochure was issued by the Post Office to publicise its international telecommunications operations and the newly created Mondial House, an international telephone exchange located on Upper Thames Street in the City of London. It was designed by architects Hubbard, Ford and Partners and constructed between 1975 and 1978. Care was taken when building Mondial House to avoid obscuring the view of St Paul's Cathedral on the London skyline. Prince Charles famously said of Mondial House, 'to me this building is redolent of a word processor'.
The building housed two international switching centres: Thames and Mondial. GEC, Plessey, Pye, Thorn-Ericsson and Standard Telephones and Cables supplied and installed the equipment. Mondial House contained welfare and recreation facilities for Post Office Telecommunications staff.
Mondial House was closed operationally by BT in 2004 and was demolished two years later.
