The Hall Prepayment Telephone Multi-Coin-Collector
This illustrated brochure describes the coin-collector produced by Hall Telephone Accessories (HTA) for General Post Office telephone kiosks or 'call cabins'. The first HTA coin collectors were installed in kiosks at Charing Cross Station in 1922.
When using the coin-collector the caller inserted their money into the slot and then was connected to the telephone exchange where the operator would put them through. The caller pressed button A upon hearing the voice of the person at the other end. If the person was engaged or there was no answer the caller pressed button B to refund their coins.
The greater efficiency of a pre-payment system is emphasised. According to the brochure, the average time spent by an operator on each call is reduced by 80 per cent. The coin-collector was also suitable for use with automatic telephone exchanges.
