Printed Ephemera — 1936
Air Mail Operation
This pamphlet is one of a series of green papers produced by the General Post Office primarily for the information of staff members. It describes the operation of the air mail service. Images show air mail being unloaded in Paris and Capetown, South Africa.
Air mail was transported from provincial Britain to London, where it was sorted and loaded into the aeroplane travelling to the desired destination. Two-thirds of air mail was for 'countries on the Imperial routes', and a quarter for European countries. Services within the territory of the British Empire were operated by Imperial Airways. The airline operated southern routes to Africa and an eastern route to destinations in Asia including India, Indonesia and Australia.
