Visit of His Majesty the King of Spain to the City of London, 7th June, 1905
In 1905 King Alfonso of Spain took a week long visit to London which begun on 5 June with his arrival by train at London Victoria where he was greeted by King Edward and taken by Royal Procession to Buckingham Palace. The King's visit was filled with a variety of visits and dinners such as that from which this menu card comes. Others included a visit to the Houses of Parliament and a banquet at Buckingham Palace, both of which took place on June 6.
Guests to the dinner were served a nine course meal which included a main of 'Barons of Beef' and a sweet course offering 'Meringues a la Creme' and 'Patisserie a la Royale'. They were also served a variety of beverages such as Champagne, Port and Claret. As well as the food and drink served, the menu outlines toasts for the evening and the music to accompany the meal and reception committee.
The menu cover is red with gilded writing and a gilded, red and blue crowned crest of Spain surrounded by a chain of office. Inside is printed brown on cream card, detailed with a guilded City of London crest on the first page.
