Case, brush case
Shaving brush case. The cylindrical case, which is open at both ends, is made of hard leather covered with silk pieced from small scraps of fabric. It is embroidered with silver-gilt purl laid over padding, in a pattern of elongated curving stems and leaves. The edges and side seams are covered with a narrow braid of plaited silver-gilt thread. Such brushes are likely to have been among the contents of the embroidered caskets of the mid to late 17th century. [Santina Levey's notes]
