Printed Ephemera — 1806-1817
Invitation
This engraving was made by Thomas Cook from an original by William Hogarth produced in the early 1720s. It shows a funeral procession about to enter a church. Hogarth has designed this invitation for the undertaker, Humphrey Drew. The scene has some characteristics of the vicinity of Covent Garden with the portico columns in the right background having similarities to those of St Paul's, Covent Garden. In the early 19th century Thomas Cook made reproductions of many of Hogarth's engravings. This print reproduces one of Hogarth's rare early engravings.
