Printed Ephemera — 1828
Lemody and The Red Barn Tragedy
Broadside printed with two ballads entitled 'Lemody' and 'The Red Barn Tragedy'. The Red Barn Tragedy ballad was inspired by the notorious murder in 1827 of Maria Marten by her lover William Corder at the Red Barn, Polstead, Suffolk.
'Murdered sweeheart' broadsides and ballads were particularly popular with the public and various ballads were written and published to commemorate the trial and execution of Corder in 1828. Whilst the majority of broadside ballads were printed in London this example was printed in Sheffield.
