Social History — 1758
Weight
Gunmetal Troy pound weight, 1758, inscribed 'LB T 1758'. This weight is a copy of one of three prototypes for the Imperial Standard Troy pound made on the instructions of the Carysfort Committee in 1758, although the Imperial Standard was not legalised until 1824. The prototype that was eventually adopted as the Imperial Standard was destroyed in the fire at the Houses of Parliament in 1834. This weight was kept by the scale and weight maker, Richard Vandome. Vandome used the weight to adjust the set of Troy Standard weights which were supplied to the Jamaican government in 1758.
