Printed Ephemera — 1932
Be patriotic, buy Empire Grown tea
This poster dates from 1932 and was one of many designed for the Empire Marketing Board, the British government's first attempt to run a large-scale commercial advertising campaign.
The Department of Overseas Trade established the board in 1926 to promote empire produce and goods. Between 1926 and 1933 it issued hundreds of advertising posters encouraging shoppers to 'Buy British'. The board also made films about the empire, organized shopping promotions and undertook scientific research to help food producers in empire countries.
