London's tramways: Caledonian market
Advertising poster commissioned by London County Council Tramways to promote their tramway services to Caledonian Market. Also known as the ‘Cally’, the hugely popular Caledonian Market was originally a live cattle market but, by the 1920s had become London’s largest market for second hand and cheap goods. It was, however, also the main distribution point of stolen property in London. This poster designed by E.G Paterson depicts a typical stall at the Market selling an array of second hand goods including clothes and ornaments. In the background can be seen the Caledonian Clock tower, built in the 1850s.
