Social History — 1929
Sign, restaurant sign
The Savoy Grill restaurant was located alongside the Savoy Hotel on The Strand. This metal and glass sign was installed above the entrance to the restaurant during a refurbishment of the Hotel courtyard in 1929. At night it was illuminated by electric light bulbs. Originally used as a supper room for actors performing at the adjacent Savoy Theatre, the Savoy Grill brought American style dining to the West End. The menu included terrapin, clams and oysters imported directly from the US. The introduction of electric signs such as this transformed the appearance of the West End at night.
