Tipstaff
Silver Admiralty oar tipstaff, surmounted by enclosed crown. Stamped with three hallmarks at the top of the shaft, at the top of the shaft: date letter A for 1796, lion passant (.925 purity) and George III duty mark.
Admiralty bailiffs escorted the procession to Execution Dock, carrying tipstaves as a sign of their authority. Each tipstaff unscrews to reveal an oar, the symbol of the Admiralty.
The shaft is engraved with the inscription: 'R.M. in acknowledgement of long and valuable services 1796'. It has been suggested that the inscription is 'fake' and was added at a later date.
