Seal
Circular steel seal of "The Company of Proprietors of the Waterloo Bridge". Private companies built many of London's 19th century bridges. Shares were issued to investors. Most of the bridge companies proved to be very poor investments; the money collected from tolls failing to pay back borrowings or distribute a reasonable dividend to shareholders. The Strand Bridge Company changed its name to the Waterloo Bridge Company in 1816, a year before opening probably to attract extra funds from patriotic investors in order to complete the crossing.
