Social History — 1939-1945
Cover, blackout headlamp cover
As part of the Blackout implemented at the outbreak of World War II, traffic lights and vehicle headlights were fitted with slotted covers, such as this one, to deflect their beam downwards. Though the Blackout prevented light from helping enemy aircraft find their targets during bombing raids, darkened streets without streetlamps also resulted in increased road accidents that injured and killed many Londoners.
