Social History — C. 1825
Taxidermy bird, case
The expansion of London's suburbs into the surrounding countryside in the 18th and early 19th centuries encroached heavily on the natural environment of wildlife. Hunting was also a popular leisure activity in the great open spaces around the city. This kingfisher was shot in the meadows east of Paddington in 1825. The bird has been preserved by taxidermy.
