Candelabra
The Jewish community presented David Salomons with this candelabra when he became first Jewish sheriff of the City of London in 1835. Parliament had to pass an Act to enable Salomons to take office, as his religion prevented him from swearing the traditional Christian oath of office. In 1851 Salomons was elected as MP for Greenwich, but encountered the same problem. He campaigned for a change in the law. Meanwhile many Jewish people were elected as MPs. In 1858 the law was finally changed to allow an oath which could be taken by non-Christians.
