Printed Ephemera — 1905
Receipt
Printed receipt filled in by hand, acknowledging a donation of £2.00 from Mrs Duke on 17th August 1905 to the 'general fund' of the 'National Incorporated Association for the Reclamation of Destitute Waif Children otherwise known at Dr Barnardo's Homes'. The receipt has a blue border decoration illustrated with medallion photographic portraits of some of Barnardo's destitute children and two of their Matrons. A month after this donation was made Dr Barnardo died aged 60 years. By this time he ran 96 childrens home, caring for more than 8,500 children. Although much loved by the poor of London's East End his methods were at times controversial. He often falsified photos of ragged children to raise funds and transported over 28,000 boys in his care to Canada.
