Printed Ephemera — 1951
Beer mat
This beer mat expresses the support of the wine and spirit merchants W & A Gilbey for the Festival of Britain. Gilbeys was an old established London firm of wine and spirit merchants. They distilled their own-brand whisky and gin and also imported wine, particularly from South Africa. By 1951 the centre of the firm’s London operations was a mammoth 20 acre site of bonded warehouses and bottling plants at Camden, next to the railway. In the 1960s, the firm moved to Harlow in Essex.
