Social History — 1751-1800
Sugar loaf cutters
Pair of domestic sugar loaf cutters. These were intended for use in the home, as in the late 18th century sugar was purchased in 'cakes' and had to be broken up into lumps before being used. After 1700, the consumption of sugar in England rose dramatically as production in the Caribbean was increased by the use of enslaved labour. Between 1700-1802 the amount of sugar imported into England and Wales increased by nearly 850%
