Charles Elwin Funeral Furnisher, Undertaker and Monumental Mason
This invoice, issued by the funeral furnisher, undertaker and monumental mason, Charles Elwin of 29-31 Pinner Road, Harrow, relates to the funeral of Alice Wheatman in 1949. It is handwritten on a printed letterhead page.
The firm, established in 1821, was a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors. The printed part of the invoice includes the specialist services offered by the undertaker of 'private mortuary chapel' and 'cremations', 'day and night service' and 'embalming'. For this particular funeral, 'a special cremation shell lined etc.' was selected. A motor hearse and two motor coaches were hired to travel from Pinner to Golders Green. The total cost including fees paid to Golders Green Crematorium came to £44 4 shillings and 6 pence. A brown 1 1/2 penny and a green 1/2 penny revenue stamp have been attached to the invoice to record settlement of the amount.
