Printed Ephemera — 1902-1903
H. Sherwood and Co illustrated price list
H Sherwood & Co made corsets, underclothing, white petticoats, silk shirts and dressing gowns. It commissioned this illustrated catalogue for mail-order customers living in both the UK and abroad. Corset designs included those suited to hot climates made from linen, cotton, or mosquito netting, as well as those appropriate for activities such as cycling and riding. Other styles were recommended 'for figures inclined to Emboinpoint' (The 'Patti Nicolini' Corset), 'to wear with Tailor Fitting Costumes' (The Tailor H.S. Corset) and claimed to reduce 'all tendency to obesity' (The Speciality Corset). On the last page 'Hartmann's Hygienic (Antiseptic and Absorbent) Towelettes' are adverstised.
The company owned factories in Clerkenwell, Portsmouth, France and Belgium. Its association with 'Colonial Houses' ensured that women going to live in the 'colonies' would be supplied with appropriate and familiar 'English style' undergarments.
