Printed Ephemera — 1914
Chelsea Arts Club Ball
Programme for the 'Chelsea Arts Club Ball' held on March 4th, 1914. The programme is in the form of a folded sheet of cream card with a printed, colour illustration on the front showing a ballet dancer in a tutu dancing with a pantomime horse. The illustration incorporates the title 'Chelsea Arts Club Ball 1914' and is signed 'Leist'.
Inside the card is printed a 'programme of music' and entertainment. Entertainment included a cock fight, jesters, a peep show and wrestlers. A menu is printed on the back of the programme. Tied through a hole in the card is a length of pink silk ribbon.
Frederick William Leist (1873–1945) was an Australian artist, born in Sydney. He moved to London with his family in 1908 and worked as an illustrator until the outbreak of the First World War. He desigend recruitment posters before becoming an official war artist for the Australian Imperial Force.
