Printed Ephemera — 1973
Spare Rib
The feminist magazine Spare Rib was first published in June 1972. Emerging from the Women's Liberation Movement, Spare Rib challenged traditional gender roles and provided a feminist alternative to traditional glossy women's magazines like Cosmopolitan. When it first appeared on the shelves the retailer WH Smith refused to stock Spare Rib. The magazine's sales were relatively low - around 30, 000 a month - but copies were passed around between women so its readership was probably much higher.
