Printed Ephemera — 1999
Veeraswamy
This 1999 menu is from Indian restaurant Veeraswamy's.
Veeraswamy's, opened in 1926 and the only known Indian restaurant in London before World War II, claims to be Britain's oldest. It was founded by the great-grandson of an English General and a North Indian Mughal princess. The restaurant was established on Regent Street following the owner's success running an Indian café at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley.
The menu describes how the new owners, the creators of Chutney Mary, have incorporated menus from private homes in North and South India.
