Social History — 1904-1909
Roller skate
Pair of roller skates made by Bramptons. They were bought and used by Edward Warner at Empress Hall, Earls Court. Warner kept these skates until 1973, when he donated them to the London Museum. He thought he had bought them around 1904. Roller skating became a huge, but short lived crazed in the first decade of the 20th century. Many rinks opened across the capital, including the Empress Skating Rink at Earls Court, London which, despite being able to hold 4200 skaters at one time, was described as 'thronged for weeks' in Autumn 1909.
