Printed Ephemera — 1943
National Registration identity card
Two National Registration identiy cards stored in a red cloth slip-case, 1943. These wartime cards were issued to Nathaniel and Bessie Freeland, who lived in Crockerton Road in Wandsworth. The family had anglicised their original surname of Friedlander. Many British Jews with Germanic surnames changed their names due to anti-German prejudice during both world wars. Civilians had to carry their identity cards with them at all times, and they had to be produced in order to claim rationed food and clothing.
