A stall selling dartboards at Calendonian market
A dartboard stall at the Caledonian Market, 1935. A notice informs potential buyers that these boards did not require soaking before use. Earlier dartboards were made of elm and required soaking overnight to soften the fibres and close up the holes from the previous day's throwing session. Originally a live cattle market, the Caledonian had by the 1930s become the largest street market in London, selling a vast array of new and second-hand goods. After the Second World War it relocated to Bermondsey to become the New Caledonian Market, specialising in antiques and collectables.
