Bandstand and Canal, Franco-British Exhibition, London, 1908
Picture postcard showing a view of the Bandstand and Canal at White City. Boats transported visitors along the canals or lagoons that linked many of the major pavilions and courts. At the bandstand could be heard a daily programme of music played by military bands.
White City had a universal appeal. Its reputation as a major tourist attraction and 'an unmissable sight to see' travelled quickly around the country and many made the trip down to London to visit, often staying in the capital for the whole weekend. This postcard was sent to a Nurse living in Hull. With a London postmarked 17 October 1908 the postcard begins 'We have had a day or two in London & spent yesterday at the Exhibition, it is a fine sight. We come home today'.
